I decided to pop to Calais for some cheap wine – we hadn’t run out of supplies from last time but they would have done so by Christmas so despite the 600 miles round trip with a cheap ferry ticket it was worth taking our very economical VW Up! to the wine shops to avoid the chancellors crazy VAT and Duty. I filled the car pretty much after sleeping in it for a few hours at the free aire near Calais beach.
I managed a ferry crossing for £27.50 return with P and O and the fuel was in the region of £50 there and back so even with that cost it was worth it given how much I managed to bring back. I can thoroughly recommend a night sleeping in a car as compact as the VW Up! – Not!!
